Mike Control - What It Be
They're tight. They're hip hop. They're in NY where the winters are cold and MTV pisses on 'em from on high. But they reek revenge in a sweet-smelling talk on music and irrationality. Listen on as Jonny Bro and the Grey Ghost of Mike Control speaks to MusicDish...
[Ben Ohmart] You guys first met in high school and found yourselves bonded together musically. How've you kept the fire going between you for these 13 years?
Mike Control Our love for music along with a lot of the same musical interests, such as different bands and different genres. Also the love to create our own sounds and discussing new idea's and being experimental with our views.
[Ben Ohmart] Your main influences are rap and hip hop, right? What is it about this religion of music that calls to you?
Mike Control Hip hop was a strong influence, but I also was into the late 80's hard-core scene. But hip hop was the main sound in our ears at the time of us growing up, it made us feel we had to be more a part of the music we loved and wanted to contribute our efforts to be more involved with it.
[Ben Ohmart] What's your favorite part - the writing or the performing?
Mike Control I love to create new material or play around with some ideas or a concept. But after you create the sound and then get out there and perform something you created and see people feeling it, that's just a beautiful thing. So I would have to say both.
[Ben Ohmart] You've been doing a lot of gigs lately. Is this full time for you?
Mike Control We both have regular full time jobs right now. I guess right now we are in the stages of getting our name out there and creating a buzz. Hopefully one day we can say this is full time for us, even though most of our time goes into our music.
[Ben Ohmart] Are you trying to wedge into major labels, or are you cool to be indie for a while?
Mike Control I'm kool with being indie, but it would be nice to get signed by a bigger indie label to help out with the costs of promotion and things like that.
[Ben Ohmart] We all know that part of the music biz is a cesspool. What do you think oughta be done to clean it up? Or is it impossible to do so when you get on the Inside?
Mike Control You just have to watch your back, and always read between the lines to make sure your not gonna get screwed over. There's not much you can do about it unless you do everything yourself.
[Ben Ohmart] So (I always ask this), what's your best backstage story?
Mike Control Nude women and violence are expected. Once I was getting a blow job from a playboy model, dropping a freestyle and signing autographs at the same time for some kids who snuck in the back
[Ben Ohmart] Since Maxim and Stuff mags are asking really stupid questions now, how about a few? Okay, here goes. Which film should be burned first - Titanic, or Buster Keaton's The General?
Mike Control I never saw either of those movies but they do sound familiar. Burn both of them.
[Ben Ohmart] Had enough? Anyway, where can we see you lately? What's up next for ya?
Mike Control You can see me on my website - my pictures are there, also we will have shows booked soon for the summer. Check out our shows' page for updates and also sign up for our newsletter from our home page, we send it out once a month. Oh yeah its www.mikecontrol.com. We will also be releasing another single in late Sept. or early Oct. Called "The Naturals"...
