The Roots live in Austin, TX (...maybe)
Caught The Roots live at Stubb's in Austin, TX and I
didn't realize it until after the show. Let me
I ran out to Stubb's on a humid Friday night to hear
my super funky homeboys tear the roof off the mother.
I was fashionably late but the opening act was pretty
good. The musicianship was a little limited... but hey,
that's why they were the opening act. Just the
foreplay before the real thing.
I knew The Roots would be coming on soon because
the openers went into "filler mode." A thirty minute
medley of old school tunes like Salt-N-Pepa's "Push
it," Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" and Run DMC's version
of "Walk this Way." This show was beginning to suck.
I was relieved to see these guys exiting the stage and
began working my way to the front of the crowd to get
ready for the real deal.
Then I noticed everyone was leaving?? I asked one of
the stage hands "Hey, The Roots are coming on next
right?" He replied, "That was The Roots." I swear to
you that I had only two watered down Cokes to drink
I wondered if The Roots were using the old trick that
Soul bands used back in the 60's of deploying two
bands with the same name to cover more territory. Of
course the copycat band was never as good as the
original band but most of the audiences never noticed.
Maybe my homeboys just had an off night but I have a
feeling that I saw the "B team" last Friday night.
Then again maybe The Roots are just a little
