Peter Green Splinter Group - Time Traders Blue Storm
Artist: Peter Green Splinter Group (www.petergreen-splintergroup.co.uk)
Title: Time Traders
Label: Blue Storm (www.bluestormmusic.com)
Genre: Blues-Rock
Peter Green's comeback over the last few years has been one of the major events that have hit the blues scene. Green was a recluse for many years and refused to pick up a guitar. Those of us that love the blues have welcomed Green's return with open arms and ears. His is one of the greatest guitar players that ever picked up a six-string and he has made some of the most recognizable blues-rock music since the sixties. Now we can celebrate and enjoy his artistry once again. He is back, and very strongly with the Splinter Group and their latest release "Time Traders."
I haven't been real familiar with Green's vocals; I was more exposed to his guitar playing in the first incarnation of Fleetwood Mac and the excellent tribute album "Rattlesnake Guitar." He does his share of the lead vocals on this album but he also shares those duties comfortably with Nigel Watson, who also plays lead and rhythm guitar. The songwriting is split between each group member effectively as well. Peter Stroud does a standup job on bass and Larry Tolfree is right in sync with him on drums and percussion. From the beginning of the first song 'Until The Well Runs Dry', it hit me that Eric Clapton's voice has a strong resemblance to Green's voice. The Green instrumental 'Underway' is a smooth and enthralling number that sounds real dreamy. Green delivers all the goods in very poignant way. His guitar is right on with every note consistently throughout this recording. 'Shadow Of My Door' is a rockin' blues burner and the strongest track on the entire set. 'Uganda Women' sounds like Ladysmith Black Mambazo more than blues-rock, it's an amazing change of direction after listening to all the songs that came before it. It leaves you wondering where the group will go the next time they get in the studio. What a great way to close out a tremendous CD. The group closes the curtains with as much multiplicity and change as they could possibly offer. This is quality blues-rock music folks, it doesn't get much better than what you will hear on this CD, believe me. Peter Green and his Splinter Group know how to do it, and with conviction. This is blues that burns a hole in your soul and has your heart crying for more, and that's what good blues is supposed to do.
