Music Industry News - as it happens
Source: Mi2N/DownSlam - November 3, 2001

I heard about DownSlam at the beginning of the year and WonkoSlice (http://wonko.com/comments.php?aid=1184) had this posting from Anonymous Cow on March 7. Headed, "from the Lube up the RIAA's backside....this is gonna stin[g] dept," it read: "Hola! After the latest Napster-slapping in the courts last Friday I decided to look at potential alternatives. That's when I came across DownSlam. These guys have some really cool ideas about the future of music in the digital age. The whole concept looks legally bulletproof and has the potential to make the RIAA bleed green. Its nice to know that even after the death of the NASDAQ some new startups are in the works."

Seems that after a lot of false starts, DownSlam is finally on the way and, say founders Storm Williams ("Sly Anti-RIAA Mastermind") and Mark Cassell ("Reformed Anarchist Hippy"), with its arrival, for the first time, musicians will be able to tap into mass impulse buying.

Running on Mac OSX and the QuickTime Streaming Server, PHP, mySQL, Apache and PHP-Nuke open source projects, DownSlam is now actively signing unsigned artists and independent labels. And WPAQ 740AM in Mount Airy, NC, will be the first terrestrial radio station to play DownSlam content with "Ground Zero" by Britain's David Kilpatrick. It's a piece which, "deals directly with the September 11th attacks in New York." All DownSlam profits generated as a result will go to the American Red Cross Relief Fund.

The company says under its Promotional Licensure Agreement, artists authorize it to distribute music on their behalf. "DownSlam will stream all works submitted by the artists, for a promotional period, on one of their 20 genre channels," say Williams and Cassell, going on, "After the promotional period is up, sales, playlist bookmarking and other listener generated web metrics determine where the song is reinserted back into the playlist. The artist can then upload a new song. The more popular a song is, the longer it stays in rotation. The best of all the genre channels become eligible to be played on 'Festival'; DownSlam's 'best of' station. The web player will let the listener buy the current song playing. They click on 'BUY' and the disc is burned and sent to the customer the next day." DownSlam says it also offers musicians other revenue streams, stating: "Chart topping artists are also eligible for inclusion on compilation discs and soundtracks; play on terrestrial (land-based) radio stations, satellite radio, public performance subscriptions for retail establishments, 'Planet Rave' subscriptions, and festival tours."
