Sean Kennedy And The King Kats - Big Town Rocket King Music
Artist: Sean Kennedy And The King Kats (www.seankennedy.com)
Title: Big Town
Label: Rocket King Music
Genre: Blues-Swing-Rock
It's been a stretch of time since I heard Sean Kennedy's swingin' and rockin' blues. He plays infectious lead guitar and he has a voice that reminds me of vintage early fifties rock and roll. His voice quivers and quakes with the excitement and belief that his very purpose in life is to rock your soul, and believe me he will. You can tell the guy is just having a blast. With Roddy 'Hot Rod' Larsen on standup bass this band really swings. The upright bass has a distinct sound and it suits certain kinds of music very well. It's actually perfect for this kind of music, and it was popularized during the swing band era. I also have to tip my hat to Jim Hannibal on tenor saxophone…you rock man. Dave Maneeley on drums is up to the task on every number and he gives everyone a great backbeat to lay down their grooves.
What's so inviting about "Big Town" is its crossover appeal; it rocks, swings, dabbles in the blues, and even offers some surf sounds with a blaring saxophone on the instrumental number 'Racer Girl.' The other instrumentals, 'Big Town' and the closer 'Room 39', were inspiring as well. I could take an entire album of the instrumentals; I really got off on all the cool sounds and variety that they offered. 'Rockin' Baby' really swings; it gets your body in motion and it won't let up. The classic Buddy Holly tune 'Not Fade Away' is done very well, it sounds revved up and it has a nice bluesy swinging rhythm to it. There isn't a dud to be found on this entire album.
When I saw who produced and mixed this album I knew instantly why it sounded so good. Barry Levenson, who is a fine musician as well, is one of the best behind the boards. He does Sean's music justice.
This is great album, and Sean Kennedy And The King Kats best yet. The man and his band are getting better every time they get into the studio. That's they way it supposed to be now isn't it?
The only complaint I have is that it was over too soon! Well, guess I will have to play it again.
