PROJECT/OBJECT, the Mother of Frank Zappa reinvention bringing three
generations of former Zappa musicians together, is scheduled to start an
East Coast tour from Buffalo, New York, on December 27. "We've always had
Zappa musicians sit in with us here and there," says PROJECT/OBJECT
ringleader Andre Cholmondeley. "But we're now entering a period where we've
reached enough of a hardcore Zappa fan base to allow us to mount this tour.
Thanks to the internet and the support we've had on previous tours -
particularly this past year - we know without question that the fans are out
The eight-city tour will mark the first time PROJECT/OBJECT has taken more
than one Zappa alumnus on the road. For this trek, PROJECT/OBJECT will
travel with four Zappa band alumni, as frequent special guest
vocalist-guitarist Ike Willis (1978-88) will be joined in the band by
vocalist-saxophonist Napoleon Murphy Brock (1974-84) and, sitting in at
various intervals, original Mothers of Invention Don Preston (keyboards) and
Bunk Gardner (saxophone), from the classic Mothers Of Invention lineup of
1966-72. Preston and Gardner will be opening all performances as THE DON AND
BUNK SHOW, backed by Rick Bartow (bass) and Mumbo (drums) of PROJECT/OBJECT.
Other Zappa alumni will be making select appearances along the way,
including a special two-night New Year's Eve (Dec. 30-31) at the Lion's Den
in New York City, where PROJECT/OBJECT made history the previous New Year's
as the only band in the world -- Zappa's included -- to play the maestro's
greatest longform piece, the three-act "Joe's Garage," in its entiretly.
That show was completely sold out.
