Music Industry News - as it happens
Source: Mi2N - January 16, 2001

You'll probably recognise one or more of these names: Townes Van Zandt, Phillip Glass, John Cage, Robert Cray, Albert King, Chris Smither, Doc Watson and Dick Gregory. What do they have in common? They were all listed in the Tomato Records catalogue - until the company went down in the early 90s. However, if founder Kevin Eggers' plans come to fruition, Tomato will be back under his direction this year, an event to be heralded by the opening of its web site at www.tomatorecords.com next month.

"My hope is to pick up where the golden age of Tomato left off and continue the conversation with another great roster of new artists," says Eggers. "We'll create a truly multimedia company, developing new and exciting forms to present music and creative ideas to the world, once again becoming a force in people's imaginations." Formed in 1968 as Poppy Records by Eggers, it settled on the name Tomato Records in the eighties. Instantly recognizable for its superb cover art and graphics, created exclusively by the legendary designer and artist Milton Glaser, Tomato Records set the standard for its commitment to artistic excellence. Its catalog includes major recordings by the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Phillip Glass, John Cage, Robert Cray, Albert King, Chris Smither, Doc Watson and Dick Gregory to name but a few.

Tomato Records first release is, Texas Rain: The Texas Hill Country Recordings, a collection of duets by the late great Texas songwriter and performer Townes Van Zandt. Featuring Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Doug Sahm, Freddie Fender, Jerry Jeff Walker and Kathy Mattea among others, Texas Rain is arguably the best recording of Townes' career. Its release is the first of several Van Zandt sets scheduled for later this year, including The Best of Townes Van Zandt and an additional volume of duets. Its typically eclectic 2002 release schedule will also include: The Cradle Will Rock, the score to the famous musical, conducted and performed by Leonard Bernstein and sung by an all-star cast; New York Zen, an audio book written by avant-garde-ist Richard Kostelanetz; and a new album by Texas blues guitarist and songwriter, Rocky Hill and the roots-rock band, Tandy.
