US cable TV co's ride on digital bandwagon

Faced with stiff competition from Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) pay-TV services, cable television is fighting back with its ability to deliver a package of digital services, including digital video service, cable modem service, and even cable telephony service, says an In-Stat/MDR report, "2002 U.S. Cable Operator Survey: Infrastructure Upgrades Deliver Digital Services to the Home".

"In order to provide these digital services, U.S. cable TV operators have spent over $30 billion in the past two years to upgrade their hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) network infrastructure," says In-Stat/MDR, going on that while some leading cable multiple systems operators (MSOs) have succeeded in upgrading the majority of their cable systems, cable industry capital expenditures are still forecasted to exceed $15 billion in 2002.

In-Stat/MDR has also says the past year has seen significant growth in the number of 6 MHz channels available on cable TV systems, adding, "In early 2001, less than one-third of all U.S. cable systems offered more than 70 channels. By February 2002, the number had almost doubled. Most cable operators are using these additional channels to introduce new analog and digital video services, with a secondary priority of broadening their cable modem service capacity."
