Music Industry News - as it happens

Could it be that everything in the garden isn't rosy for MPEG LA?
At the end of January 31, it announced it would offer, "fair, reasonable,
nondiscriminatory access to patents (owned by 18 companies) that are
essential to the MPEG-4 Visual (Simple and Core) digital compression
standard under a single license to be known as the MPEG-4 Visual Patent
Portfolio License and provided an initial overview of the proposed license
terms," with the important caveat, "the actual license agreement is still in
development, however, and all terms are subject to change".
Now, following what it calls "a healthy dialogue," MPEG LA says details of
the license agreement are still being worked out.
"Everyone is working with all speed," it adds, "but because of the challenge
posed by the effort to produce a joint licensing program requiring a
consensus among at least 18 different patent owners and the yet undetermined
future implementations and applications of the emerging MPEG-4 Visual
technology, it will take additional time to complete this process."
