Canada's Aquatic Cellulose is a very cool company with a very cool product.
It harvests standing timber - once considered lost - at Tucurui reservoir in
Brazil using ATH (Aquatic Timber Harvester) technology, a robotic harvesting
system for underwater cutting and retrieval tasks.
As Aquatic Cellulose says on its web page at
www.aquaticcellulose.com, it, "specializes in the recovery and
processing of this lost resource to provide the finest old growth product
without negatively impacting living forests."
So? - you ask?
Washburn International, one the world's finest stringed instrument
manufacturers, recently debuted new electric guitars crafted from AQCI's
Aqua hardwoods at the 2002 NAMM Trade and Convention Show in Anaheim, CA.
Larry English, Washburn vice president, said, "Enthusiastic response from
potential clients indicates strong market demand for instruments crafted
from submerged woods. We look forward to building more guitars using premium
Aqua hardwoods, and to forging a long term supply relationship with Aquatic
English said Washburn had performed acoustical tests on AQCI's hardwood
prior to shaping the guitar body at its facilities in Mundelein, IL. "After
careful study, our experts concluded Aqua is a superior tone wood offering
acoustical advantages to other comparable woods," he said. "Our conclusion
confirms what many in the music industry have known for years - underwater
woods make for superior musical instruments."
