Nitro – The CD Sound
Nitro is known as the CD sound and is made up of Jeff, Coco, RingDing, Genius and TeTe. Jeff is the emcee, whilst the other sound members are selectors. TeTe founded Nitro in October 1997 and all members hail from Jamaica and have been with the sound for 3 years.
The name of the sound is derived from liquid nitrogen, commonly used in racing cars and airplanes. The sound shortened the name and say, "when you come to hear Nitro play, you will feel and hear power."
Before being in Nitro, Jeff played with Blackmagic and Indica out of Toronto while RingDing played with Niterider 5000 and Impact out of Toronto. Coco was also on Impact while Genius played with Adonai, Emporer and Uprising out of Jamaica.
Although Nitro started out in Canada, the sound is now based in Jamaica.
Jeff’s inspiration to get into the business was his father and "seeing him play music" from an early age. He also cites Rory from Stone Love as another inspiration. As well as being in Nitro, Jeff is a producer and songwriter.
So far Nitro have played in North America and Bermuda. They would love to go to Japan for the 1st time. Their best response was at R.A.S. Promotions ‘Beer Vibes’ in July 2000. Nitro have also played stage shows for Lexxus and Capleton.
The idea of being a CD sound was due to Nitro wanting to be "different" from other sounds and "part of the next millennium." They feel they can mix better and do more with CDs as opposed to vinyl, but say "that is something you will have to see for yourself."
Every member of Nitro comes up with ideas for dubs and although they are a CD sound, they still have dubs cut conventionally on plates and sometimes on CD, but they never use vinyl when playing out. Some of their favourite dubs include Buju, Junior Reid, Beres, Alton Ellis and other foundation dubs. They enjoy listening to other sounds such as Adonai, Stone Love and Renaissance.
As with most sounds, Nitro enjoy playing out and getting a response, but on the flip side, they believe, "most people look down on selectors as bums and some of us have degrees and are educated with families." They believe there should be more unity in the sound business and for sound systems to promote new artists and "bring couples back into the dancehall."
If Jeff hadn’t gone into the business he would be a lawyer or family counsellor, RingDing would be an accountant, Coco a mechanical engineer and Genius in real estate.
For the future Nitro plan to put on their own events, tour worldwide and produce.
Look out for the CD sound, as they could most definitely be the sound of the millennium…
