US Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr, Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on
Crime and Drugs, has introduced an anticounterfeiting bill aimed at making
it illegal to counterfeit authentication features such as holograms embedded
in CD packs, software and movies.
Currently, prosecutors can only charge someone for trafficking fake computer
software, not for counterfeiting the features that ensure that the product
is genuine. Biden's "Anticounterfeiting Initiative" would also allow victims
of counterfeiting crimes to, "pursue the criminals themselves and recover
damages in federal court."
