Event Review: Le Tigre
The Metro, Chicago, IL
Like many other young people, I am confused about a lot of issues that our generation is confronting. Mainstream media has a way of force-feeding information down our throats, putting emphasis on what "they" dictate important. The reporters, all racially and sexually diverse to insure appropriate coverage, speak in the same monotone voice and rarely venture out of politically correct verse. This makes me feel so desensitized, that the news becomes counter productive.
You might be asking yourself, "Is this a concert review?" Well, I have been reading a lot of reviews about Le Tigre. One thing that is commonly mentioned is that their powerful lyrics are far removed from the upbeat, pop-heavy guitar and keyboard accents. In my opinion, it is this very element that makes everything stronger. If you have ever listened to Bob Marley or Fela Kuti, you know that equally powerful music, lyrics, and rebellious nature can be realized. Through strength and hope we continue the fight. Even though life is hard, we must celebrate.
"Hot Topic, What's Your Take On Cassavetes," and "My My Metrocard" are exuberant pop classics that become more infectious live. Le Tigre's energy is unsurpassed. With the addition of various video montages, the crowd seemed almost overwhelmed. Between-song conversation was kept very personal and sometimes informative. Lead singer Kathleen Hanna has a very sweet, innocent voice when she speaks, making her even more alluring.
The atmosphere transcended expectations. For this brief period in time, we seemed lost in a moment. "On Guard" and "Keep On Livin" relentlessly pushed the fervor. "Keep On Livin, Keep On Livin," echoed throughout the audience. Not a body remained still, nor was a voice unheard.
For one last glimpse of Le Tigre, on the last night of their tour, the Chicago crowd was treated to a party. This truly was a celebration and everyone was invited. Closing with Bikini Kill's (Hannah's former band) "Finale," it was a wonderful send off to a much appreciative audience.
