Exhumed and Edited by: Janet Fisher (Goodnight Kiss Music)
Section 2: Choruses of Fear
Chapter 13: "Louisiana Swamp Monster"
Author: Jerry Cupit

I had been in Nashville a few years and had absolutely nothing happening. Being from Louisiana, I hunted most of my life, so I decided to get some people's attention with what Cajuns call "the Louisiana swamp box." The back half of the box was made of wood and the front wire. The center had a small half moon circle that look similar to a mouse hole, in which I firmly place a piece of an old wig. The back top had a screen door latch with a hinge on which I placed the remainder of the wig. When you flipped the latch, it would throw the wig on the person in front of you. I set off to Music Row.

The first place I went was Music Mill Studios, which was owned by the famous producer Harold Shedd. There was a group of people in the lobby and after telling them the story of how this small creature killed my two big dogs, I brought the box in. I told them the animal was shy, but if they took a pencil and poked it through the hole, it would show itself. They did and I flipped the latch. People ran everywhere.

I made my way up and down Music Row scaring everyone I came in contact with, including some of the biggest names in the business. Everyone soon knew Jerry Cupit.

The last scare was with the president of Warner Brothers Records, Jim Ed Norman. I had called him several times and could not get him on the phone. I found out where he lived, built a box, enclosed a letter with a tape of my songs, and dropped it off on his steps. The first thing Monday morning, he called. He told me that he and his family had been out of town and when they arrived home, they saw this box on their steps. What I did not know was he had recently had his life threatened by some crazed songwriter artist. He thought the box was a bomb and called the cops. They carefully checked out the box, were also scared by the wig, and went on their way. I figured Mr. Norman would be angry, but he said his kids went all over the neighborhood scaring everyone.

All this led to years of producing and writing songs, such as Ken Mellons' Jukebox Junkie, but my songwriting and production didn't open the door - it was the box.

Jerry Cupit is a well-known record producer in Nashville, Tennessee, and charted songs among the credits.
