When I hear the name Steve Miller I think of three albums-"The Joker," "Fly Like An Eagle," and "Book Of Dreams." If three albums can make a legend Miller is proof of it. Those three releases churned out some huge hits, one after another. It's been a long time comin' for the release of these great live dates, as Mr. Miller intimates in the liner notes. Speaking of the liner notes…they are such a great read! It's a really entertaining time capsule that uses succinctness and brevity to get to the point of the matter. It's always a nice addition to listen to music and sit down and read the stories and the take from the artists' side of the street. The artwork is outstanding and the black and white cover is austere and poignant. It's a well put together package.
I found it interesting listening to the version of "Fly Like An Eagle" on the first disc, I could tell something was amiss in the way the guitar parts sounded and the how Miller was singing it. I later read in the liners that he was trying the song out before he actually recorded it and got so nervous he forgot some of the words and stumbled. Hey, it happens to the greatest of entertainers, they are after all human. He redeems himself with a superior version on disc two. The first disc is steeped in the tradition of the blues throughout. Miller reaches down real far and pulls out some heart felt soul and scorching guitar leads on "Jackson-Kent Blues," "Blues With A Feelin'," and "So Long Blues." "Living In The U.S.A" and "Space Cowboy" are stand up tracks as well. Disc two leads of with the song that brought his career to the next level, "The Joker." Some more down home cookin' blues explodes on "Kitchen Blues ("Come on in My Kitchen") and "Mercury Blues." It's all just downright funky and soulful; it just doesn't get any better. I found myself cruising in the warmth of the sun with the windows rolled down listening to this great music…perfect. "Wild Mountain Honey" and "Songs For Our Ancestors" are also notable.
The sound is per usual extraordinary for a live recording. King Biscuit has prided itself with above average live recordings for years now, the tradition continues with another great one for the archives. Don't miss a beat and pick this one up now, make your collection one that everyone will envy, mine is. Man, I sound like a commercial huh? Well, I just get so excited and turned on when a classic rock release comes my way, and when it's this good I feel like I am eighteen again, and damn that feels good.
