Music Industry News - as it happens

"Comedies" represented the largest share of the DVD genre pie at 29% with "action" ranked second (24%), and "drama" third (21%), says the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA), the home video entertainment industry trade group. It also pointed out that although comedies remained the predominant genre in both DVD and VHS, suspense, action, and drama populated the top five ranking DVD titles.

In the meanwhile, as of July 21st, consumer spending on DVD rentals had surpassed DVD rentals for the entire year of 2001, both in number of rentals and rental revenues, said the VSDA. For the weeks ending January 6 - July 21, 2002, DVD rental revenues reached $1.47 billion, according to VSDA's VidTrac POS tracking technology for measuring national consumer video rental spending, based on actual rental transactions .

"This is an increase of $7 million, or 5%, over the $1.40 billion spent in all of 2001," says the association. "During this 29-week time period, patrons of the digital medium rented more than 459 million discs - an increase of 15 million, or 3% more DVDs than the 444.8 million rented in 2001. These milestones in DVD rentals were reached in just over two quarters."

New releases accounted for $849.5 million, or 58%, of the overall DVD rental spending for this period (tracking all new DVD releases since the beginning of the year for eight weeks).

"With strong performances from DVD properties like Monster's Ball (Lion's Gate), Rat Race (Universal), Zoolander (Paramount), and Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone (Warner), it is clear that DVDs are no longer a format chiefly targeted to and preferred by the action-oriented males 18-34 audience," said VSDA's Director of Research, Brad Hackley, adding that as a percentage of national video rental spending, DVD has risen an additional percentage point from the end of the second quarter to its highest level ever at 31%, leaving the remaining 69% to VHS.
