The Good and The Very, Very Ugly
Cover Song Trashing

It seems that every other single in the charts is a cover song. If you can't write a classic then [apparently] the next best thing is to steal / annihilate somebody else's. Cover songs usually take two forms: On the one hand, you have dodgy boy and girl bands churning out even dodgier covers of classic pop tunes from years gone by. Atomic Kitten's cover of the Bangles' "Eternal flame" is a perfect example. Then you have the other form of covers . . . bands and singers have been known to do strange covers during gigs. These often find their way onto B-sides or are slipped into dark and greasy corners of albums when nobody is looking. These covers do tend to be more obscure or unusual and are done for a bit of entertainment. Travis' version of Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby" is a good example.

Taking all of this into consideration, then here is a list of those cover songs that stick in the memory most of all: (The list is divided into two sections: Good covers and very very ugly covers. Depending on what age you are, you might want to turn the list on its head.)

The Good: "Nothing Compares To You" - Sinead O'Connor (Prince); "Dizzy" - Vic Reeves and the Wonder Stuff (Tommy Roe); "Spirit In The Sky" - Doctor and the Medics (Norman Greenbaurn); "Handbags and Gladrags" - Stereophonics (Rod Stewart); "Can't Help Falling In Love" - UB40 (Elvis); "The Walrus" - Oasis (Slade); "With a Little Help From My Friends" - Wet Wet Wet (Joe Cocker); "I Got You Babe" - UB40 with Chrissie Hynde (Sonny and Cher); "Baby Come Back" - Pato Banton (The Equals); "Everything I Own" - Boy George (Ken Boothe); "The Land Of Make Believe" - All Stars (Bucks Fizz) "Take A Chance On Me" - Erasure (ABBA); "Nobody Does It Better" - Radiohead (Carly Simon); "Cinamon Girl" - Radiohead (Neil Young); "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" - Low (the Smiths); "Stand By Me" - John Lennon (Ben E King); "Lost In the Supermarket" - the Afghan Whigs (The Clash); "If There's A Hell Below" - the Afghan Whigs (Curtis Mayfield); "Creep" - the Afghan Whigs (TLC); "Regret" - the Afghan Whigs (New Order); "Moon River" - the Afghan Whigs (Henry Mancini); "The Temple" - the Afghan Whigs (Andrew Lloyd Webber); "When Doves Cry"/ "The Cross "- the Afghan Whigs (Prince); "Ex-Factor" - the Afghan Whigs (Lauryn Hill); "Miss World" - the Aghan Whigs (Hole); "Hit Me Baby" - Travis (Britney Spiers); "You Give Love a Bad Name" - Bananarama (Bon Jovi); "Without You - Mariah Carey (Nillson); "It's Like That" - Jason Nivens (Run DMC); "You Don't Have To Be" - Tom Jones (Prince); "American Pie" - Madonna (Don McLean); "Stuck In The Middle With You" - Lousie (Steeler's Wheel); "Eternal Flame" - Atomic Kitten (The Bangles); "Father And Son" - Boyzone (Cat Stevens); "Lady Marmalade" - All Saints (Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mya, Pink); "Singing The Blues" - Tommy Steele (Guy Mitchell); "Dream To Me" - Dario G (the Cranberries)
