An Interview with The Nashville Attitude
Winner of 2002 New Jersey Country Music Association Male Band of the Year Award
I recently caught up with lead singer/songwriter Marc Vincent and guitarist
Sal Azzarelli of the band, The Nashville Attitude, in between sets at a gig at The Wild Bean. The band recently won the “NJCMA Band of the Year Award” and lead singer and songwriter Marc Vincent recently won the “NJ CMA Male Singer/Songwriter of the Year” award. The other two members of the band are bass player Sean Burns and drummer Dave Strickland, the newest member of the band.
The unique interpretation of honky-tonk Americana in both their original recordings and cover material has brought the band from the clubs to the big stage when they opened for Travis Tritt, Diamond Rio and Shane Minor. When in Nashville, TN, the quartet is also featured in hotspots such as the famous Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, The Gibson Guitar Cafe and the Bluegrass Inn. [Cindy Beth Gordon] Hi Marc, it's good to talk to you. Congratulations on winning the NJ CMA award. You must be thrilled! So, how do you feel about winning the award and what has the band been up to lately?
Marc Vincent We're glad about that [winning the award]. We had a really busy Summer. We played a lot in Atlantic City, NJ. We were performing at three different hotels down there - Bally's Wild West, The Claridge and The Hilton. We were down in Nashville Memorial Day weekend doing some showcasing.
We also did the culture fest show recently in Bryant Park in Manhattan, which was artists from all over the five boroughs, and we were featured on that for the 2nd year in a row, so we were quite happy about that. We're going back into the studio Halloween week and hopefully we'll be able to finish our record for the New Year.
[Cindy Beth Gordon] That's your 2nd CD? Do you have a name for it yet?
Marc Vincent Yes. The 2nd CD is probably going to be titled Served Nightly. You can sample some of it on our brand new website at www.thenashvilleattitude.com.
[Cindy Beth Gordon] I know you've recorded at several different studios. Which studio are you going to record this CD at?
Marc Vincent We're working at a new studio called Cloud Nine Recording. It's in Long Island, a completely analog studio, which is something we've been looking for - to record like they do down in Nashville. I'm here with Sal Azarelli right now who's a cowriter and also a co-founder of the band.
[Cindy Beth Gordon] Hi Sal. So, how did you hook up with Marc?
Sal Azarelli I was born in Brooklyn, NY, a Brooklyn, Italian. The way I met Marc, I was in a band called High Noon another country band, just playing the covers. There was an ad in the local paper looking for a country musician, he wasn't even looking for a guitarist, because he's a great guitarist himself. I called him up, we wound up talking on the phone for two hours. I went down to hear his band - I said "you guys are great, but you'd be much better if I was in the band."
[Cindy Beth Gordon] And what instrument do you play?
Sal Azarelli I play guitar also. It's a real treat, because Marc is also a great guitarist, but because we need somebody to sing and hold everything down, I have the privilege of playing all the "fancy stuff."
[Cindy Beth Gordon] And you've also co-written songs with Marc?
Sal Azarelli Yeah, I co-wrote three songs with Marc. One is going to be on the new record, and two are on the first CD. Basically, I've been playing with the guy for over 7 years now we pretty much can anticipate with each other what we're going to do next. And Marc being the great songwriter that he is, he has the privilege of writing with the band around him, so that helps him with his creativity.
[Cindy Beth Gordon] So what's your future plans with the band?
Sal Azarelli We're playing at Whiskey Café - Oct. 26th. Our main objective now is to go back and get the 2nd CD recorded. When you're so busy playing, it's hard to get into the studio because you have all these bookings and obligations that you have to honor like the one we have to go back and play! [According to Sal, they may play Nashville and possibly play in Europe as well.]
Sal Azarelli We have to start heading back inside, it's been a pleasure talking to you.
[Cindy Beth Gordon] Same here.
Marc Vincent Thanks, Cindy, we're actually walking right back into the club and putting the guitars on and playing.
[Cindy Beth Gordon] Ok, I'll catch up with you soon.
Marc Vincent Thanks a lot, have a good night.
[Cindy Beth Gordon] Ok, you too. Catch the Attitude!
