Poindexter - Heading for the Hills
The US Department of Defense (DoD) has been under relentless attack since
it appointed convicted felon Dr John Poindexter as head of its IAO
(Information Awareness Office), an arm of DARPA, the DoD's central research
and development organization.
One of the IAO's primary tasks was to develop and build closed-loop "Total
Information Awareness" (TIA) computer systems to allow US law
enforcement agencies to tap into, "collections of people loosely organized
in shadowy networks that are difficult to identify and define" to gather
"Is he the kind of guy you'd really want in a situation like this, who
has a record of lying and handling untruths?" This question referred to Dr
John and was asked during a DoD briefing
on the subject.
Forget about whether or not the creation of the IAO is/was desirable in
the first place.
Be that as it may, there was a fascinating, and official, DoD site
offering a carefully crafted Poindexter bio, and details of various IAO
projects. We say 'was' because soon after news of the Poindexter appointment
fiasco broke, the DoD started 'sanitizing' the site.
Dr John's bio - and others - disappeared. But no prob. You can see it -
and said others - here. Then the scary logo with the all-seeing eye (as
above) vanished from the intro page. Next, the chart below was temporarily
replaced with the one underneath it.
The final image as it now appears on the TIA page is below.
Note the appearance of the weird red 'Access restricted by law' pix. And
the 'eye' has been removed from the pyramid. Now you can sleep at night.
