A Definition for Punk

Punk has really emerged as one of the most popular types of music. From the likes and roots of early bands such as Bad Religion, Orange 9mm, and The Clash, it has really evolved over the last few decades. One of the most defining punk bands of our time has to be Rancid. It started the whole crazy hair and chains styles that we see today. It was also a band that lived for themselves and no one else. Their music was so different than the popular genres of those days, but they continued doing what they loved. This eventually started to evolve into funny punk. Some bands are out there to be energetic and lively. We see this in bands such as Sum 41 and Blink 182. Although the times and sounds are different, one thing will always be certain: change is bound to happen.

Over the last year, punk fans have seen one of their own begin to go soft. This person goes by the name of Avril Lavigne. She dresses punk, has spiked bracelets, baggy pants, and a punkish-looking band. However, her music is rather soft compared to the rest of punk. She calls herself a skater-girl, and says that she is a punk icon. As a result, the punk population has criticized her as being a ‘fake,’ or a ‘fraud,’ or the most common of all, a ‘poser.’ But wait, isn’t punk a style of music made based upon change. And if so, who can so boldly say that Miss Lavigne is not a punk? The only requirement needed to be a punk is for you to think for yourself (and, of course, listen to punk music). That is it. You don’t need to dress up and put 50 pounds of chains and rings on to be a punk. Punk people are always open-minded, and it’s a tragedy when these open-minded people crash down on an open-minded lady.

Finally, as a huge punk fan myself, I would like to recommend people to some great bands. Check out Allister, No use for a name, Twothirtyeight, Beautiful mistake, and Further seems forever. They are great bands that get little to recognition. But, then again, that is the great thing about emo. Since you never see it on TV, you have to get out there and search it for yourself.
