Spotlight on Degree
He started out as General Degree then dropped the 'general' to become just Degree and his real name is Cardiff Butt. Who are we talking about? Remember the hit tunes "Traffic Blocking," "When I Hold You Tonight," "Papa Lover," and "Cartoon Character?" Well, that's the very same DJ - Degree.
Degree was born and raised in Mandeville, Jamaica. He initially started out as a tailor, but wanted to be a DJ. Back in 1989, Degree released his very first single entitled "Mother Rule Pickney." He recalls, "It was the first song played on radio." However, it wasn't until 1992 that Degree got his first big break when he released the comical track "Granny" that he recorded for Mainstreet producer, Danny Browne.
At "30 little bit," Degree has acquired three record labels: Size 8, Pretty Boy and Dutch Pot, because as he says, "Pretty Boy was my first, then I always come up with so much ideas, so Size 8. Then still more and I came with the 3rd label." He has since created numerous hit rhythms such as Pot Cover, Quicksand, Dry Cough and Arrow. Pot Cover was his first rhythm release.
Even though he is a talented producer himself, Degree has still worked with loads of other producers including Penthouse, Shocking Vibes, Mainstreet and Bobby Digital. He writes 95% of his lyrics and says he maintains his image by being "original and polite."
Degree has done well in the business so far and he says, "I give thanks for what I have achieved and just hope I get what I deserve. I've put a lot into the business. I've done a lot of work."
The future sees Degree "doing more production" and he advises aspiring DJs to "Be real to yourself. Be honest. Don't force it and be original."
Obviously being original has paid off for Degree as he has stayed in the business for going on a decade now and is still going strong.
