Kazaa's relationship with Altnet - motto, Promote and Sell, flagship product Peer Enabler - is cosy and Kazaa owner Sharman Networks and Brilliant Digital Entertainment / Joltid, Altnet's owners, are determined to milk Kazaa users.
One way or another.
In fact, perhaps Sharman should rename Kazaa, KaZaA(ltnet).
"Sharman Networks is working hard to deliver a new version of the Kazaa Media Desktop, with exciting new features and capabilities, as part of its mission of delivering the best P2P experience in the world," it says, going on, "You can be a part of that process by participating in the Kazaa v2.5 Beta test! "

And, "As part of Sharman Networks' development process, you can download a pre-release beta version of Kazaa v2.5 (and the bundled software) and help test the product."
Bundled software? Yep. With Kv2.5 comes Peer Points. Configured to run at startup. Whether you want it to or not.
What's more, that's not ALL you get.
"Peer Points Manager includes a number of program and data files, mostly installed in the C:\Program Files\Altnet folder," say the guys. "Some software components (DLLs used by Peer Points Manager and other Altnet applications) are installed to the Windows\System or WinNT\System32 directory. Installing Altnet applications will not modify any existing files on your computer.
"Peer Points Manager includes the Altnet Download Manager, a program that allows you to download Altnet files from the Altnet P2P network when clicking download links on supporting web sites.
"Peer Points Manager uses PeerEnabler, a P2P networking component from Joltid (www.joltid.com). PeerEnabler is also used by other 3rd party applications, including Kazaa Media Desktop. If PeerEnabler is not already installed on your computer then it will be installed as part of Peer Points Manager installation.
"By agreeing to the Altnet EULA at installation you also agree to the installation of 'My Search Toolbar' provided by The Excite Network, Inc.The My Search Bar is a customizable browser toolbar which provides end users with easy access to search results from the best search engines on the Internet in just one click, including results based on websites, directory listings, images, news, and FTP files."
You can uninstall this junk. But why should you have to?
Anyhow - can you use Kazaa 2.5 for music - other than stuff offered by KaZaA(ltnet) that is? Apparently so, and it has new search features.
According to the online blurb, "Multiple search results tabs: Each search you perform is displayed in a new window. This means that your search results won't be overwritten by each new search you perform. You can switch between the search result windows by clicking on the tabs at the top of the current search results window. Once you are finished with the results of a search, just click 'X' on the search tab to close it.
"Up to 5 'Search More's: You can now 'Search More' up to 5 times depending on your Participation Level. Read more about Participation Level. Five 'Search More's allow you access to up to 1,000 results per search. Each 'Search More' displays up to an additional 200 search results.
"Search interface has clearer 'Quick' and 'Advanced' search tabs: 'Search' view allows both quick and advanced searches. Use the advanced search to obtain more accurate results in less time."
