Title: Carol's On My Mind
Label: Angel with Nail Polish Records
Genre: Rock/Pop, Alternative, Folk
Of all the things that captured my imagination right from the beginning before I ever listened to this CD, was the name of the artist and the label. Remy de Laroque is absolutely French, and it sounds so sophisticated and international compared to the typical pop-star-phony manufactured names that we have come to expect. Those characteristics do not stop there, oh no. The music is just as imaginative and exceptional on his new album Carol's on My Mind.
The first singer that came to mind while listening to Laroque exercise his vocal expressions was Ray Davies of The Kinks. He does not always sound like Davies, but the resemblance came up enough during the course of this recording for me to notice that it created an impact like the noteworthy charismatic legend himself is capable of.
There is a sufficient amount of rock, pop and alternative in Laroque's musical blender to satisfy anyone's musical palette. Although this is not groundbreaking and innovative music, it sits somewhere between consistent and pleasant with enough elements of rock, albeit tasteful, to keep people that prefer to rock straight away from fidgeting in their seats. I would not consider it radio ready top-forty friendly either, it is outside that territory, and that is a compliment. I personally do not care for music that is over the top 'alternative' and this CD did not disappoint, not in any aspects. There seemed to be just enough of each genre mixed in for a nice balance, and that all-important stability is what holds your interest from start to finish on this album. That one quality is what most releases are lacking today, so that alone should be enough to peak your interest to explore this CD, assuming of course you are in search of music that has certain standards. If you look at the credits you will see the multitude of musical instruments utilized and come to realize why this is such an appealing amalgamation of recorded works. Laroque is quite the talent, besides a stellar performance in the vocal department; he plays guitars and congas with the fire and passion of a man on an undertaking to win you over heart and soul. To his credit, he gets the job done with relative ease.
I noticed on the inner sleeve of the CD jacket under the credits that Laroque very unselfishly draws attention to his main supporting cast by putting their names in a larger font, it may be something subtle and many people would not notice it, but I did. I thought it was nice that he took the time to do that. I respect an artist that leaves his ego at the door and really appreciates those that help to make the music happen. With an attitude like that, Laroque will go far in the music and life.
