Spotlight on Bill Yuns
William Osborn was born in Vallejo, California, and got involved in Hip-Hop in 1988, just after Eric B & Rakim and Big Daddy Kane came out. Rakim & Run DMC inspired him and from the age of 17 he began to get noticed as a solid producer and artist. From that point, Rap and production became his life's passion.
Most people call him Bill. One day as a joke, Bill's friend, Mike Wingo, started saying Mr Yuns, short for Bill Yuns, pronounced 'billions,' and it just stuck.
Bill produced an artist named Cooley Roc from Seattle, Washington, released in 1995 under Xenosoul Records. The track sold 15,000 units, which isn't bad going when you consider that it was strictly underground, with no distribution or promotion. He also produced tracks for Urban Tongue, Chosen, Hypnotik, Tiffany Wilson and various other artists in the Seattle area.
Bill has is own label called Yun Stand Me? Records, which launched in the autumn of 2000. He released his single, “What's My Name?” in December 2001, which is available online at www.cdstreet.com. He plans to follow it up with an album, which is due to drop in March 2002. He has rapped and co-produced on the album version and he has had another producer, J1, come up with the remix.
”What's My Name?” has received a great response from club DJ's, college radio and larger stations, such as KUBE 93FM in Seattle. Bill Yuns is now starting to move units in the Mid West and has been doing extensive performances.
Bill frequently performs at two venues in Seattle, Washington, Contour and CafÈ Arizona, and he has recently performed throughout the Northwest region of the United States - Washington and Oregon - and Vancouver, Canada, opening for acts including Digital Underground, The Luniz, and Tommy Davidson. While on tour he has received his best response in Los Angeles, California. He would love to travel to and tour Europe.
Bill doesn't consider any one particular occasion to be the highlight of his career. Instead he gives thanks for "just seeing the reactions of people when they hear my music. That is the highlight for me. Just moving the crowd."
Bill listens to a wide variety of Hip-Hop, Rap and R&B, because he believes "It keeps me versatile." He maintains his image by paying close attention to the young Hip-Hop crowds, because he sees them as the ones setting the pace for the next generation of Hip-Hop. "If you want to stay around and have longevity, you have to appeal to their generation of Hip-Hop,"
Bill feels good about his accomplishments thus far, but he has every intention to "make a lot of noise worldwide" and with Hip-Hop finally receiving the respect it deserves, this may not be as difficult as it once could have been. Bill remembers when people thought that Hip-Hop was a phase that would pass over time. Hip-Hop has "stood the test of time and created a dominant force in the music industry." Bill thinks Hip-Hop can only continue to evolve and become stronger. "I am proud of the unity that Hip-Hop is gaining and I hope it only continues to explode at an alarming rate."
Looking ahead for the future, Bill plans to continue making the best music he possibly can and to develop a powerful independent label that will expose Seattle artists to the rest of the world. His advice to upcoming artists and produces is, "If you love it, and you live it, you can achieve it. Always strive to be the best."
