David Hooper is the president of Kathode Ray Music in Nashville and promotions director for 2NMC, a great event happening in Nashville September 10th - 14th.

[Doak Turner] How did the 2NMC Music Conference get started a couple years ago?

David Hooper I attended a "conference" almost five years ago that was here in town called "Indie Music Week." It was a complete joke and people were paying something like $350 to play a 20 minute set at Douglas Corner. I was at the showcase and talking to the bands. Most were really pissed off. And I was pissed because I want Nashville to have a good reputation in the music industry. That's when I first starting thinking about doing something. The time wasn't right though because there was already another big conference here and another one being planned. Those events went under, so I knew it was my time to make a move. Brought it up to a couple of friends which hanging out eating pizza and that was the start of 2NMC.

[Doak Turner] Doak - Why should someone attend the 2NMC event and who should attend it? Is it mostly for artist, or would songwriters also benifit from attending your event?

David Hooper While I work in the music business, I am a really a marketing guy. My job is to sell CDs, get people to shows, etc. 2NMC is designed after that. If you want to make money in music, we're going to show you how to do it. We also have a lot of "major label" types...and publishing companies. If you want to get with that aspect of the business, we have it at 2NMC as well. 2NMC presents the real music business, from do-it-yourself to major label, and let's our attendees make the decision on it. The networking opportunities are incredible and you'll walk away with the information you need to make more money than you ever thought possible doing what you love.

[Doak Turner] What are the goals of 2NMC.

David Hooper We want to empower musicians and artists.

[Doak Turner] What kind of success have you seen happen for those who attended you previous events?

David Hooper There have been countless deals made with help from 2NMC. Everything from bookings, to record deals, to publishing contracts... I never take credit and say things like "2NMC got this band signed" though because I'm not going to insult people's intelligence like that or take credit for the work of SEVERAL people... and we all know that is what it takes to make something happen in music.

The real success, regardless of how it happens, is that we teach bands a step-by-step process for making more money in music and making their music business dreams a reality.

[Doak Turner] If I am not showcasing, why should I come to 2NMC?

David Hooper Education and networking are the two main reasons I'd come. There are plenty of opportunities during the event to get your music heard though. We have live performance reviews, demo listening/critiques, mentor sessions, and more.

[Doak Turner] Anything else you would like to tell the readers regarding 2NMC?

David Hooper 2NMC has a moneyback guarantee. If people don't feel the event is worth it, they'll get their money back.

Note from Doak - I attended 2NMC as a songwriter in 2001, and found it very beneficial for networking and learning about the music industry. Go to for details on the 2NMC conference.
