[This article is part of the MusicDish call to articles on the topic of "Sex and the Music Industry"]

Since the roots of early rock 'n' roll in the 1950s, a major debate has rose to this present era: does sex belong in music? Whether it makes or breaks a career of a musician, sex has been the creation of obscene dancing, steamy lyrics, pornographic-themed videos, luscious artwork, and artists who creates a hormonic rage among individuals. Is this movement a necessary diablerie or a misunderstood soul lost in the long terrain of music?

Just simply by saying the word "sex" you will automatically grab the attention of other individuals. With this in mind, you have the power to grab everyone's focus and place all eyes on yourself. So, what musician wouldn't want to create a packed audience by saying such a devious word? After all, sex is a common act. Sex brings life. We're here because of sex. We enjoy sex. We even peek at sex. So, why such a hidden agenda facing music in regard to...well sex? With the traditions of conservatives controlling our government, individuals are expected to show an amount of respect toward private acts. After all, we don't want to become an influence for youngsters whose hormones are flying beyond roof tops. Plus, what about religion? How can we show reverence and dedication to the existing symbol that gives explanations for living? If we're required to reproduce and keep our population going, why can't we sing about it?

Now, let's move to the creative artist, the musician. That individual wants nothing more, but to expose it's soul and give us their talents. However, with such an unforgiving society, any wrong move and no one will remember you. Therefore, it's up to the artist to decide how can they make an impact that will make way to a successful career on an establishment aspired throughout their lives. Their muse can be personal experiences and emotions we can all relate to. Yet, there's no golden rule of what's acceptable toward music. Remember, music is a lyrical expression that has no given boundary. So, when an artist decides to focus their inspiration on sex, why give them such a hard time? They're only trying to express themselves with the art of making love.

Whether you consider yourself a sex addict or a quiet prude, remember that sex will always thrive to music. We just can't help, but be human and become fascinated by such a private act. It excites us and causes our focus to exist solely on it. It will exists through Elvis Presley caused television edits, Madonna creating another midnight fantasy or B.B. King singing how he loves the way his sweet angel "spreads her wings." Face it: sex sells whether you like it or not.
