Ike Turner's place in music is secure for his many contributions to the blues, rock, rhythm & blues and pop worlds. His website hails him as the Godfather of rock 'n' roll; if you listen carefully to the different styles of music presented on this recording you may agree.
The Blues Kingpin series of releases puts the focus on early recordings of influential artists such as Turner, providing firm substantiation of the importance of his career as it was developing. These particular tracks from the '50s draw attention to when Turner was making his name as a vocalist and guitar/piano player. You can tell by the sound quality in several of the tracks that it was indeed the '50s. I realize some of the recording studios and equipment were not the best available in those days, hence the antiquated sound quality.

The 18 tracks selected adequately describe how Turner's talents were blossoming in every area of the recording process. I was surprised to hear some country influenced tracks and an instrumental featuring a tremolo effect that reminded me of The Ventures and The Shadows titled "Cuban Getaway." It is interesting to note that Turner was recording music such as this long before the other two groups I mentioned came into prominence. For me this was a good experience. Previously to hearing this CD I had not listened to any earlier recordings by Ike Turner. I most certainly have a newfound appreciation for what the man has accomplished in his long and successful career.
