From The Front Row...LIVE!Is actually the "I've Suffered For My Art... Now It's Your Turn" Marshall Crenshaw album that was originally released on King Biscuit Flower Hour records 2001, which I had the pleasure to review. This version however has the tracks in a different order and is on the Silverline label in the distinguished DVD-A format with a booming 5.1 surround sound. While saying Crenshaw's music is booming is a bit over the top, it is not an understatement regarding the sound, as their have been some significant improvements in the 2003 version. I have one complaint about this format though, why do they make the jewel cases in such a large odd shape? It makes it difficult to store along with all the other CDs in your collection.
The first thing I noticed was the intro to "Someday, Someway" (which is also a bonus video). Crenshaw's voice echoes from the microphone making it sound as if he is right inside your speakers talking to you personally. I clearly remember that not being a part of the original recording, and that was just the beginning. Crenshaw plays endearing rock 'n' roll songs just like the '50s and '60s music that has influenced him so much. "Walk Away Renee" is one of the better tributes to the song masters of yesteryear and "Cynical Girl" was another one of my favorites. This man can carry a tune and melody in a most sincere way that makes his every word cling to you without ever letting go. All great singers have that special gift.
All the right elements are in place...a legendary venue like the Stony Pony, a well-known poet/singer/songwriter and great music, which makes for a magical combination and a wonderful evening for the audience present (and now for you). It is all compacted on one disc, just pop it in and become surrounded by unadulterated genuine rock 'n' roll delight. How could you possibly turn down an invitation like that?
