EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

Name: Justin van Stom
DOB: 1964
Position/Company/Salary: Partner, Michael Chugg Management , Sydney, AU
Website: www.chuggentertainment.com

Michael Chugg Entertainment remains a pioneer of the Australian music industry with his years of experience in organizing and promoting international artists such as The Police, Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli and Sammy Davis, Jr, R.E.M., Bon Jovi, Kylie Minogue, Elton John, Billy Joel, Madonna, Vans Warped Tour, Sting, John Fogerty, Guns 'N Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Garbage, KISS, Pearl Jam, Tom Jones and The Cure, to name a few, from over 135 international tours while general manager of Frontier Touring.

[Danny Canak] How did you get your start in the music industry?

Justin van Stom Snuck in backstage at INXS outdoor show in Heathcote in '85. Helped myself to food and drink and started a conversation with this guy who turned out to be INXS' manager. I did a weeks work experience with him and made a few TV and radio commercials, as well as a video presentation for Midem of his publishing company MMA Music. He liked them all. I started working with him in his publishing company about a month later.

[Danny Canak] Best part of the job?

Justin van Stom It's not a job. I love it and it's all about the music!!!!

[Danny Canak] Worst part of the job?

Justin van Stom See above.

[Danny Canak] Favorite CD of all time and why?

Justin van Stom Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin. I was 11 and it had just been released. All music to my ears up ‘til then was good and exciting. I would stay up all night with my little AM radio stuck to my ear. Then this record was released and my older brother brought it home. We played it on dad's f**k-off stereo without his knowledge. It blew my mind completely. And still does!!!

[Danny Canak] Tell us about the best live show that you ever saw?

Justin van Stom First time I saw a live band, actually. I was again 11. They were a cover band playing at the local sailing club. They were great!!! Seriously, Grinspoon coming on stage in front of a full stadium at Livid after we had all been in the US for months and months and months. It was the first show back and the band played liked they were untouchable. They ruled Livid and the crowd went berserk. The hard work was worth it for that day.

[Danny Canak] Favorite bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?

Justin van Stom Wherever my wife and close friends are hanging. Tropicana for breakfast - spinach, smoked salmon and avocado. Delish - their spaghetti napolitana is excellent.

[Danny Canak] In the current climate, what advice would you give to someone looking at getting involved in the music industry?

Justin van Stom Say out loud three times "I'm in the music biz" and get off your arse and do whatever you must to get in. Work with your dream band, company, record store, whatever, for no pay for a month and really show them how brilliant you can be and how indispensable you are. My granny said if you have anything upstairs you'll make it, college education or not.
