Interview With Sa-Sancturary's Drummer, Mykill
Premire Thrash Metal Band From Texas
Sa-Sanctuaryhas been at it for years. Recently, and
back a few years, it has paid off for the guys. They
are a seriously brutal combination of speed and death
I spoke with their drummer, Mike Aresco (aka Mykill), after the SA-SANCTUARY LIVE @ Bonds 007
show in San Antonio, Texas.
[Jen Connelly] WOW! You guys have changed. I do not remember
the band being this angry before!
Mike Aresco Yeah, we have some issues! I have the most,
[Jen Connelly] You are the "new guy," huh?
Mike Aresco (laughing) No! Our keyboard guy, Romeo, is! This is
my 4th year with them. I have kind of persuaded them to
write faster and heavier material, to get back to the
first question. When I entered, it was a different
style than now. To try and shake off the past is
difficult, but people are taking notice of the
[Jen Connelly] The keys give a Fear Factory type of feel.
Mike Aresco Yeah, they are in the background, but not too far
back. Without them, it sounds very different. The keys
are an important part of the sound, as with Fear
[Jen Connelly] Does your label have a lot to say about the CDs?
Mike Aresco Iím not sure what you mean. [But] as far as material we
write, no. But as for where [the CDs] are available, how
much, how many - that is out of our control.
[Jen Connelly] You have opened shows for some legends.
Mike Aresco Judas Priest, George Lynch, Exciter, Flotsom and
Jetsom, David Wayne and Reverend. Even Budgie. Why? I
don't know, but we did. In my last band, we played
with Fear Factory, Overkill, Sacred Reich, and John
Connelly of Nuclear Assault. Any relation?
[Jen Connelly] No. What do you do, in preparation, to play so
fast for so long?
Mike Aresco (Laughs) Well, I'll tell you what I don't do. I do
NOT use alcohol, smoke or use drugs. I drink a bunch
of coffee, so that is my only prep. I am very focused
on what I want to achieve, and all those things
mentioned are distractions that steal your motivation.
It is not interesting, but it's honest.
[Jen Connelly] Well, what ever it is, you sound very good.
Mike Aresco Thanks! I owe a lot of my sound to my equipment.
Without Paiste, Tama, Vater, Alessis, or Ddrum, I'd
sound different. Skill is VERY important, don't get me
wrong, but that skill has to be transformed into
sound, and those sounds define your skill. All the
sounds that come from my set-up, especially my
cymbals, are unequaled by any others.
[Jen Connelly] Sounds like an infomercial!
Mike Aresco (Laughing) I guess it does! Nah, none of these
brands even know I use their products. I just really
love my equipment. I say this because it's the truth.
My set is made up of the best combination of products
you can buy.
Thanks to Mike for his time. Sa-Sanctuary is a premier
Thrash band that has to be seen!
