Seven-piece progressive funk band, The Nose takes home the trophy as Malaysia's Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) champion for the biggest music competition for bands playing their original songs live.

Shah Alam band, The Nose challenged 12 other bands at the GBOB Malaysia Finals in Penang recently to secure a slot at the 8th GBOB World Finals in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 8 February 2014 to perform two original songs live. There, they will share the stage with 17 other bands from around the world.

"We support GBOB because it focuses on bands playing their original music in front of a live audience. The Nose will represent Malaysia in Chiang Mai because they presented passion, good songwriting skills and great showmanship to the judges. GBOB is not a popularity contest and the champions were selected based on five criteria; technical skills, songwriting, showmanship, relevance. I'm pleased with the selection, although it was a tight competition especially between the top six bands," said event promoter, Jasmine Low.

The Nose band members are Samuel Anak Andria Bangit (vocalist), Muhamad Zharif bin Muhamad Zaki (alto and tenor saxophonist), Muhd Tareeq Aziz bin Che Abdul Muhsin (bassist), Mohd Zairul Azreen Shah (guitarist), Thadeus Anak Saga (guitarist), Ahmad Suhaib bin Hidzir (drummer) and Shammir bin Horace (keyboardist).

The GBOB World Finals Concert is organised by GBOB Worldwide Ltd in collaboration with the Chiang Mai Singers Artists Association (CMSAA) and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). It will be hosted by Thailand's top two TV personalities - Sonia "Pim" Couling and MTV VJ, Michelle Waagard and will take place at Chiang Mai's International Convention and Exhibition Centre at 6pm (+8 GMT) on 8 February 2014. The live concert will be streamed via www.livebox.me.

13 bands signed up to compete in the GBOB Malaysia Finals held at Soundmaker Studio and Chinahouse in Penang on 4th and 5th January 2014. Judges comprising of three music industry independents had their identities kept secret until after the competition. They are; Saiful ‘Hermano' of Y2K band, GBOB Malaysia Champions 2009, Cole Yew of Soundmaker Studio and Marco Ferrarese author of ‘Nazi Goreng'.

The bands were scored based on a point scoring system and the top six are; The Nose (Shah Alam), Djezna's Stalker (Cheras), The Outbreak (Kuala Lumpur), Fin Chemistry (Penang), Son of a Policeman (Subang Jaya) and Viv Adram and the Northern Jazz Unit (Penang).

The Organisers have teamed up with Zenith Travel & Tours to offer a tour package for fans and the general public to visit Chiang Mai in support of the Malaysian band starting from RM1250 nett per person inclusive of return flight from Kuala Lumpur, 2-night hotel stay and return transfers to the airport and concert. Interested parties can contact Khairul at zenithtourstravel@gmail.com.

Gbob Malaysia 2013/2014 is crowd-funded, and welcomes brand sponsors to come forth for a larger scaled 2014/2015 season.

"We would like to thank all participating bands for their passion and especially partners like Narelle McMurtrie and Kien Lim of Chinahouse for their support" added Jasmine Low.
