The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Arts for Transit & Urban Design today announced that 23 performers and groups have been accepted into the Music Under New York program. The musicians were chosen from approximately 60 acts that performed before judges at the program's 27th annual auditions on May 13 in Grand Central Terminal, where Arts for Transit also unveiled a new logo and brand identity for the program by the design firm Pentagram.
A panel of musicians, music professionals and transit representatives judged the performers based on quality, variety, and appropriateness for the mass transit environment. The musicians that auditioned this year represented the diversity of music and its genres, including Aboriginal didgeridoo, bluegrass, Brazilian jazz, traditional Chinese orchestral music, soul, and klezmer.
